Materials Testing involves testing of the materials used in new build projects or additions and amendments to existing projects. Our team takes all relevant factors into consideration when conducting materials testing, such as the unique requirements and scope of each project as well as the site of the build and the surrounding environment, to provide the most comprehensive picture of material characteristics and the operating performance of the raw material and the finished product.

At ProtechGeo, we use materials testing to adequately test the physical and mechanical properties of composite materials involved in your construction project, including concrete, soil, and asphalt testing to ensure proper quality control and quality assurance. All project site inspections and material testing services are provided on an as-needed or on-call basis.

We provide expert evaluations, soil testing, and practical recommendations to ensure your construction project is safe, stable, and cost-efficient from the ground up.

Our Approach

Testing has to fit the pour schedule on your site. We agree the sampling frequency and the hold points with your site supervisor before work starts, then attend on the days that matter. If a result comes back short, we call you the same day, and the written report follows.

What does materials testing cover on a site?

Concrete, soil, aggregate and asphalt. On a typical build that is cylinders and slump at each pour, compaction testing as fill goes in, and coring once asphalt is placed. Your contract specification sets which tests apply and how often. We read that specification and build the testing schedule from it.

How often do samples need to be taken?

Your specification says, and it varies. A municipal contract and a private spec often set different rates. We work to the number in your documents. If the spec is silent, we suggest a rate and you approve it in writing.

How long before I have a concrete strength result?

The standard acceptance break is at 28 days, because that is the age CSA A23.1 uses for specified strength. That is set by the concrete, not by our lab schedule. We also break a cylinder at seven days, which gives an early indication of whether the mix is tracking. Field results for slump, air content and temperature are available at the truck while the pour is still running.

Do small residential builds need materials testing too?

It depends on what your permit and your builder’s contract require. A municipality may ask for compaction testing on backfill before it signs off on lot grading. A warranty provider may ask for concrete results. On an engineered foundation the geotechnical report usually names the testing it expects. Send us the permit conditions and we will tell you which tests apply. Requirements differ between Edmonton, Calgary and the surrounding counties.

Alberta first, from our Edmonton base and laboratory. We also take materials testing and geotechnical work in British Columbia and Saskatchewan on scheduled visits.
