Getting the Heart of the Matter
Construction materials testing (otherwise referred to as CMT) is a specific category of geotechnical surveying concerned with, as you may have inferred, testing the materials both currently on, and intended for use on any job site. CMT is a highly detailed process that covers several different factors and materials including soil, asphalt, concrete, masonry, and just about everything in between. The end goal of materials testing is to ensure that your team, as well as all parties involved in construction know exactly what to expect from the job site, as well as any resources you intend to build with. Materials testing will not only reveal compatibility but also help to identify key risk factors and allow you to plan accordingly to avoid delays or costly mistakes.
In order to provide the most comprehensive overview, construction material testing takes place in two separate factions; field testing and laboratory evaluation.
Field Testing occurs directly on-site for roadways, utilities, infrastructure, airports and other such projects and will typically involve compaction, moisture and air content evaluations, among several other tests. From evaluating load-bearing walls, to using LiDAR and other NDT methods to take a closer look at roadways and more, field testing is a great way to get a better idea of what you’re working with and to design a construction plan that accommodates accordingly.
Laboratory Testing comes into play in instances where further study is needed due to inconclusive field results, difficult landscapes, or any other complications that merit additional, more intensive, evaluation. The scope and scale of laboratory tests will vary depending on the material and project itself but can range from bearing rations and swell testing for soil to mix evaluation, stability and flow for asphalt, or compression test, tensile evaluations, and more for concrete.
